Nose Surgery – Rhinoplasty
The nose is an important part of the face, personality and our character. It is made up of cartilage and bones, which are needed for the nasal function. However, both parts can be reduced and corrected for appearance by performing a nose surgery, also called rhinoplasty. At Shape Medical Centre is one of the few clinics specializing in facial surgery/nose surgery. Our doctor has a long and solid experience in this area. Nose surgery largely represents what plastic surgery is, artistic creation and technical implementation. The face plays an important role in our appearance. Through our facial expressions, we show our feelings and through the appearance of the face we are recognized. If you do not like your look, modern plastic surgery can shape and change tissue so your appearance changes according to your wishes. The nose is an important part of the face and its character, but you usually do not want it to take your eyes. It should harmonize with the rest of the face shapes and contours.
Incisions and technique
The reshape of the nose is normally by reducing or increasing its size, removing a hump, changing shape of tip or bridge, narrowing the nostrils, or changing the angle between nose and upper lip. It may also relieve some breathing problems. The skin quality and the size and shape of the nose in relationship to the face are studied. Sometimes correction of the chin can be done together with nose surgery to balance the face. A nose surgery is usually performed with anesthesia, or in exceptional cases with local anesthesia, the surgery is usually performed mainly within the nostrils to avoid visible scars. A nasal surgery can be performed in a variety of ways, the cuts are placed inside the nose, for example, a lumpy nose will be corrected, thus eliminating the cartilage and reducing its size. Each case will depend on the patients preconditions and taken in account by the doctor. A nose surgery usually takes about thirty minutes to two and a half hours depending on the scope of the surgery and on an inpatient basis.
Temporary swelling, bruising around eyes and nose, and some bleeding.
Serious complications from nose surgery/rhinoplasty are not common. Potential complications include hematoma (an accumulation of blood under the skin which may require removal), infection and reactions to anesthesia. Numbness of the skin following rhinoplasty may occur but is usually temporary. Occasionally, further improvement can be obtained through a second procedure.
There should be no pain after rhinoplasty. Dressings usually stay for seven days. Stitches usually reabsorb and do not have to be removed. During the first two days after surgery it is necessary to sleep with the head elevated to reduce swelling and the possibility of minor bleeding. A small amount of bleeding on the dressing is not uncommon for the first two days.
