Different lips or irregularity may be a problem for some women. The commonest deviation is too large inner lips. Also with aging the vulva tends to lose some of its substance and elasticity, this procedure helps rejuvenate the area. This surgery has been developed for the removal of excess or uneven tissue from the labia, the folds at the margin of the vulva, correcting any irregularities.
Incisions and technique
Labiaplasty can rectify the larger outer vaginal folds to make them more or less prominent, depending on the problem. It can also treat the the smaller interior vaginal folds, which apart from the aesthetic complaint, can often cause chronic irritation, rubbing, or discomfort during sexual intercourse. The reduction of the vaginal folds can also be done with a laser. Usually the procedure doesn’t take longer than thirty minutes to perform and normally with local anesthesia, or local with sedation or under general anesthesia, if preferred by patient. Labiaplasty is usually performed in an operating room but in selected cases surgery can be done in the office under a local anesthetic at decreased costs.
Infection, bleeding and delayed healing could occur and there could be some discharge (reddish-yellow) for four to six weeks.
Normal recovery time is one to two weeks. Stitches are usually reabsorbed, but sometimes may have to be removed.
Duration of the results
The labia should maintain its new aesthetic look for many years. This might change with ageing or if the patient undergoes vaginal childbirth after the procedure.
